Alright, bookworms, let's dive into the literary escapades of 2024! Last year, I set out on a mission to conquer a book per week, but this time around, it's all about quality over quantity. No more reading for the sake of checking a box – it's time to indulge in the books that truly resonate. I'm focusing on books that I will really love and books that people recommend with the same taste that I have. If I get through the first 60 pages or so of a book and am not feeling it, I'm just going to consider it read, and move on to the next one. Here's a few books I've read so far this year that have actually made an impact and I would recommend.
Don't forget to follow me on Goodreads to see what I'm reading next!
- A House With Good Bones by T. Kingfisher: This pick is a curveball, considering I usually steer clear of anything too spooky. But when a friend raved about it and the library shelves beckoned, I couldn't resist. Short, thrilling, and surprisingly easy on the scares – call it my initiation into the world of creepy reads. Are we entering the era of my own personal haunted library? Maybe, just maybe.
- Discipline Is Destiny by Ryan Holiday: Ryan Holiday, you've officially won me over. "Disciple Is Destiny" is my initiation into the Holiday fan club, and I've already ordered a hard copy to keep in my literary arsenal. Forget preachy self-help that don't actually help and someone wrote for bragging rights – this one is a captivating collection of influential stories. It's like having a backstage pass to the lives of game-changers, and I'm here for it.
- Maid by Stephanie Land: I cried my eyes out after watching the trailer for the Netflix series and know it would be too emotional for me to watch. I opted to read the book instead and it really delivered. I still cried my eyes out but it also gave me so much gratitude. While reading this, my prayers were full of gratitude and thanks to God and crying while rocking my daughter to sleep because of how lucky I felt, rather than prayers full of requests and feeling annoyed and exhausted from a toddler that won't go to bed. I love the feeling of gratitude it gave me and need to get to that mindset more often.
- The Surrendered Wife by Laura Doyle: This title of this one might scare a few people away, but wow wow wow is it good and unexpected. I imagined it was very anti-feminism and after the first chapter found that it was quite the opposite. The goal is to create a intimate marriage without any resentment or power struggles. It's about giving up all the stressful things you do in life to your husband and learn how to rely on and trust him. It's a book I've highlighted and taken notes on and will continue to go back to.
- Dolly: My Life and Other Unfished Business by Dolly Parton
- The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan:
- The 38 Letters from J.D. Rockefeller To His Son:
