This year, I took a hard look at our Christmas decor. I started taking inventory of what I’ve collected over the years—identifying the “junk” from Target that clutters our space versus the pieces that spark joy and nostalgia every time they come out of storage. The goal? To create a home filled with the magic of Christmas while keeping things clutter-free and intentional.
Memory-Making Pieces Only
After a major overhaul, I’ve ditched the filler and kept or added pieces that feel timeless and special—ones that my kids get excited about and will remember year after year. Here’s what’s making the cut:
-
Adding Red Bows Everywhere: On wreaths, stair railings, and even door handles. It’s such an easy, timeless touch that never feels overdone. Plus, it’s classic and festive without leaning into the "sad beige Christmas" vibe.
Swapping Instead of Adding
I’m not a fan of clutter, so I’ve embraced a “swap, don’t stack” rule. For every Christmas piece I bring in, I replace an everyday item.
- Throw Pillowcases: Instead of adding more pillows, I use seasonal pillow covers over our existing throw pillows. These covers are chic, easy to store, and add a festive feel without creating chaos.
The Perfect Nativity Scene
After years of searching, I finally found a nativity scene that strikes the perfect balance—classic but not minimalist to the point of abstraction or overly stylized to the point of creepiness. (sorry Target for calling your stuff junk earlier).
Fresh Greenery and Flowers: Trader Joe’s and Costco are my go-tos for poinsettias and fresh wreaths. Filling corners and doors with live greenery makes the house feel vibrant and alive. Bonus points for the incredible scent!
As I continue refining our Christmas decor, the focus is on simplicity, warmth, and timeless joy—pieces that create memories and set the scene for a truly magical holiday. If you’re also ready to refresh your Christmas decor, start with what makes you happy and nostalgic, and let go of the rest!
