With two kids I've really had to lean into a better morning routine. While I was pregnant with my second our mornings looked like me being morning sick in the bathroom while my toddler watched Frozen for the 7th time and eating waffles on the couch. I was just simply too sick to do much during my pregnancy. Now that I'm officially postpartum, I've been craving the sense of routine and getting out of the house.
First rule of thumb? Prep like a boss the night before. I'm talking packing up a toddler-friendly breakfast bento box with yogurt and hard-boiled eggs and setting out clothes and sunscreen by the stroller.
I wish I could be the mom that gets up before her kids for some me time, but I'm firmly in the "wake up when the kids wake you up" camp. My husband steps up here and takes over holding down the fort while I take an ice-cold shower to kickstart my day. Trust me, it's a game-changer and wakes me up better than coffee. I do a quick 5 minute makeup routine and usually throw in a hair treatment in a bun, because we're multi-tasking queens over here. I love a matching workout set for these walks because they're quick and easy and I can throw them on without much thought and still run around with the kids at the park.
Next up, breakfast time. While the kiddos fuel up on the go, my go-to has been soft scrambled eggs on ricotta toast and then sip on my coffee in a to-go mug and soak in those precious morning moments. Then we load up our trusty stroller and hit the pavement for a morning walk to the park. I grab my headphones and ice roller and listen to a podcast while we walk. Sometimes breakfast happens en route, other times it's a breakfast picnic amidst the playground chaos – either way, the goal is simple: get outside, stat. They play at the playground for as long as their hearts (or our schedule) desire and then we head home to start the rest of the day.
Now, here's the kicker – I've noticed a serious uptick in mood and nap quality for my littles when we kick off the day with a morning stroll. It sets the tone for the entire day, leaving everyone – including yours truly – in a better headspace.
